“Melissa”

Calacatta Marble - 40x110x45cm

Melissa is an exploration of extraordinary flexibility and the harmony of opposites. A study of my young niece, the sculpture captures her folded completely over her legs, a pose that transforms the human figure into a seamless, circular form.

In this work, the rough stone is given equal weight and proportion to the figure. It rises from her feet like a crashing wave of water, nearly washing over her. This intentional balance creates a silhouette reminiscent of a Yin-Yang or an Infinity symbol, suggesting a continuous loop of energy and the interconnectedness of the body and the earth.

By blending the soft, supple lines of a young gymnast with the jagged, powerful texture of the stone "wave," the sculpture investigates the balance between strength and surrender, and the infinite shapes the human form can inhabit.
