“Daniela”
Statuario Marble - 40x70x30cm
Daniela is a deeply personal sculpture that preserves a fleeting moment of infancy. The piece depicts my two-month-old daughter in her most characteristic state of rest: peacefully sleeping on her back with her thumb in her mouth.
The figure of the infant emerges from a rough, unhewn block, symbolizing the raw potential and unformed future of a new life. Interspersed throughout the base are carved building blocks that anchor the piece in time and identity. These blocks spell out her name, her birthdate, and the nickname "Cucciola"—a fond Italian term meaning "little puppy."
By contrasting the delicate, soft features of the sleeping child with the rigid geometry of the name blocks and the jagged texture of the stone, the sculpture explores the intersection of biological vulnerability and the structured legacy of family history.
