Key Messages

Marble

Key Messages is a series of eight sculptures that form a core pillar of the Homeless exhibition. Each piece is carved from Carrara marble to mimic the appearance of a typical cardboard placard, but the messages they carry are far from temporary.

To create these works, I asked our unhoused neighbors a single, vital question: "What do you want from the community in which you live?" Their responses—including "I Am Human," "I Grew Up Here," and "I Get Scared"—are carved into the stone using the same formal lettering style found on traditional tombstones.

By using the language of a cemetery, the sculpture suggests that these individuals are often treated as if they are already gone, or that their pleas only gain permanent weight once it is too late. The work forces a confrontation between the fragile cardboard we see every day and the unyielding marble that records our history, asking which one truly represents our communal conscience.
