House of Cards
2019
Statuario Marble - 90x45x60cm
House of Cards is the foundational piece of the Homeless exhibition. It is a composition of the hand-held placards used by individuals to ask for help, which I collected from the street and reimagined as a stacking "house of cards" in the shape of a home.
The sculpture is carved from luminous Carrara marble, creating a sharp, intentional contrast with the "disposable" nature of the cardboard it depicts. By using a material historically reserved for the elite and the immortal, the work elevates these temporary pleas for help into a permanent record.
This choice of stone highlights the stark gap between the value we place on high art and the value we place on human life. The "house" appears fragile and ready to collapse, reflecting the extreme instability of life on the streets, yet it is rendered in a stone that will last for centuries.
