Varner Family

Calacatta Oro - 40x15x40cm
The Varner Family continues the exploration of the "malleable block" abstract style, using fluid, elongated forms to map the internal architecture of a family.
The composition centers on the partnership between Scott and Gretchen. Their forms stand as the foundational core of the piece, yet they are distinct in their roles as parents. Resting on Gretchen’s hip is the smaller, integrated form of their young son, a shape that suggests the physical closeness and constant contact of early childhood. To Scott’s side stands their teenage daughter, a taller, more independent block that remains connected to the family unit while beginning to reach toward her own height and individuality.
By stripping away literal features, the sculpture focuses on the balance of weight and support. It captures a specific moment in the Varner family’s history—the contrast between a child who still needs to be carried and a teenager standing on her own, all held together by the central strength of the parents.
