A Table for Two

2023

Statuario Marble - 174x50x15cm

Table for Two plays on the familiar phrase used for dinner reservations, but here it reveals a much harsher reality. Part of the Homeless exhibition, this sculpture depicts a "table" made of discarded cardboard, set not with fine china, but with two plastic water bottles, a crumpled takeout bag, and a paper food box.

By using your signature style of carving these objects from raw stone, you give a sense of heavy permanence to items that are usually thrown away. The rough, unhewn base of the sculpture serves as the "floor" of the city, grounding the meal in a public, exposed space.

The work explores the contrast between luxury and survival. It asks the viewer to consider the intimacy of a shared meal even when reduced to the barest essentials, and how the simple act of eating becomes a public display of poverty.
